Outdoor Events

We have numerous outdoor events throughout the year regardless of what season we are in.  The events can involve different aspects of the Duluth MN and surrounding areas of the Twin Ports.    This will include anything from using Lake Superior, North Shore Scenic route, Canal Park, Bayfront, trail systems, etc.

One of our larger annual events is Grandma’s Marathon.  Participants come from all over the world to run along the shore of Lake Superior.  The race will finish in the Canal Park area.  There are thousands of people running and spectating.

Our Bayfront area is a great place for different events.  It sits along the Duluth Harbor area close to Canal Park.  You will be able to attend anything from festivals, concerts, and even Bentleyville.  Bentleyville is one of our main Christmas time attractions.  They have millions of lights setup and thousands of visitors every year.  They have a walk path setup to follow through the lights.  There is typically even some snacks/hot cocoa there along with a spot to visit Santa!

It's not always about the bigger events here in the Duluth area.  There are many events that happen at local bars, lakes, or parks.  The Chester Bowl Fall Fest comes to mind.  It can be a great time with music, food, and other vendors.  The weather doesn’t always cooperate here in Duluth though!

North Shore Scenic Route

The North Shore Scenic Drive technically goes for about 154 miles.  I am talking about the section that runs from Duluth to Two Harbors right now.  That is one my favorite spots to go for a scenic drive not far from the city of Duluth.  It has many great views of Lake Superior.  There are multiple stopping points to look over the lake and some spots that will have a walk path directly to Lake Superior.  Parts of the road have bigger shoulder space so you won’t always be right next to the traffic as well.

There will be some homes along the scenic route as well.  Not many homes are available for purchase along this route throughout any given year.  You will see some restaurants along the scenic route and McQuade Small Craft Harbor.  One of my favorite stopping points to view Lake Superior is French River Wayside.

Duluth Hill

One of the main aspects of living in Duluth Minnesota is using the Duluth Hillside.  The hillside is part of the lifestyle here.  It stretches for miles along Duluth and Lake Superior.  We have plenty of areas above the Duluth Hill and below it.  I want to focus more on what the hill involves when you are living here.

It is the main reason we have amazing views of the landscape and Lake Superior.  We have different attractions and scenic routes you can utilize that are built around experiencing the hillside.  The Skyline Pkwy is our main scenic route towards the top of the hillside overlooking many parts of Lake Superior as you drive along the road.  A great spot to visit is Enger Tower.  You can head to the hillside and find one of the benches looking across Duluth.

You will want to be cautious if you need to drive on the hill during a snowstorm or when the roads are getting icy.  Depending on where you live and work, you might not even have to use the hillside for traveling very often.

There are a few other items to keep in mind if you are looking at homes for sale in Duluth MN.  If you are looking at a home on the hillside the property setup will vary.  You might find a home with a view of Lake Superior.  The view might vary from a full on view out your living room window or outside on the deck.  There are many views that you might only see a small bit of the lake out a certain window when the leaves are gone on the trees.  So it really depends from property to property.

Some of the other items you might see in your home search will be the setup of the yard and garage.  There will be some tuck under garages that were built into the hill to allow for some garage space.  They weren’t all built for bigger vehicles though.  It is always good to verify the garage door size etc.  Some of the yard space may be on the hillside.  You will have to verify that property to property as well.  There will be many variations with a yard that is flat or steep.

Canal Park

Canal Park in Duluth is one of the main hubs of traffic in our area.  It is built around enjoying Lake Superior and the Harbor.  There are many restaurants and retail shops down there.

You will often see the iconic photo of our Aerial Lift Bridge.  The Aerial Lift Bridge is at the end of Canal Park.  Many people visit that area to see boats pass through as the bridge is lifted up.  You will be waiting to cross the bridge to Park Point if this happens!

There are also different activities you can enjoy down there as well.  We have different options for renting bikes, scooters, and even segways!  Many people on our nicer days will be riding around and hiking along the Duluth Lakewalk.  Part of the Lakewalk has been built up to allow for a walking path and riding path.

If you adventure over to Park Point in Duluth, you will see many visitors in the Park Point Park area.  That is the main access to the beach area with more parking options.  You will see people visiting from all over to experience the sand beach along Lake Superior.

Duluth MN Weather

Minnesota has four distinct seasons of weather throughout the year.  If you are new to dealing with the changing seasons and weather, this will help you plan for your move to Duluth MN.  You will be needing a variety of clothing.  Each season has its own experience.  Most often you will hear about the winter cold and snow.  But in Spring and Fall there can sometimes be multiple types of weather in the same day.

The lake effect from Lake Superior is part of what protects the area from certain weather and also makes it a little difficult to predict sometimes.  We do have a higher average snowfall than some other parts of Minnesota because of our proximity to the lake.  It is also a big defense against weather like tornadoes.
