About Park Point in Duluth Minnesota

Park Point is a neighborhood in Duluth MN.  Park Point sits across the Aerial Lift Bridge from Canal Park.  Park Point is approximately 7 miles long.  This is supposed to be one of the world’s longest freshwater sandbars.

Park Point sits between the Duluth Harbor Basin, Superior Bay, and Lake Superior.  This can be a spot for you if you would like to live closer to direct access to Lake Superior and possibly live on the beach or waterfront on the bayside.  The main connecting roads on Park Point are South Lake Avenue and Minnesota Avenue.  South Lake Avenue is the road that brings you to the Aerial Lift Bridge and will allow you to cross back into the Canal Park area of Duluth.

What is close to Park Point?

Park Point has many places to visit on the sandbar.  Some of the areas include Duluth South Pier Lighthouse, 12th Street Beach, Park Point Park, Sky Harbor Airport, and Park Point Trail.

You can get to the Duluth South Pier Lighthouse by crossing the Aerial Lift Bridge from Canal Park.  This is the first area available to visit in Park Point.  The Aerial Lift Bridge does have a pathway along side the road for anyone that isn’t driving over to Park Point.  This can be a great spot to view the boats going through the canal.

The 12th Street Beach is located just off South Lake Avenue.  There is a small parking lot available here.  There is a short walk to the beach area along Lake Superior.  This is one of the first areas that has more parking and easier public access to the beach without having to drive too far.

The main park here is Park Point Park.  This is where you will see more people visiting the area head to.  This area has easy access to the beach side by Lake Superior and Superior Bay.  You will find a larger parking lot.  There is a recreational field and sand volleyball in the immediate area.  As you head up the stairs towards the beach side you will find the Park Point Beach House and the Park Point Beach.  You will see lots of activity along the beach area and out on Lake Superior.  There is also a boat launch near the parking lot.

As you continue down passed Park Point Park you will find the Sky Harbor Airport.  This is as far as you can drive down.  There is some parking down here as well.  Part of the airport setup is two sea runways.  You will likely find the Beaver Air Tours being offered if you are looking to see the Duluth area!

The start of the Park Point Trail is located next to the Sky Harbor Airport.  This trail system is about 4.5 miles round trip.  Once you get passed the trail section along the airport you will get to the initial section that is more like a normal hiking trail.  There are multiple points to walk to the beach area by Lake Superior or Superior Bay.  This is one of my favorite hikes in Duluth.

Park Point does not have many retail options.  The closest central area for retail and restaurants is in Canal Park.  Canal Park is our main travel zone for tourists as well.  You will have access to many restaurants, breweries, and some small retail shops.  A few other attractions of the Canal Park area are having close access to the Duluth Lakewalk, Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC), Bayfront, and Marcus Duluth Cinema.

What is close to Park Point?

It will be about a 20 minute drive to the Miller Hill Mall area or to the North Shore Scenic Dr.  Any traveling will have to factor in if the Aerial Lift Bridge will be lifted allowing boats to pass through.  The lift bridge will have a regular summer schedule due to higher boat traffic.

You can find homes for sale in the Park Point neighborhood.  There will be opportunities that come up for sale along the sand beach area.  There are homes on the bay side with waterfront.  The lot size tends to be smaller out on Park Point the way everything was built up with limited parcel space.
